How to network regulating valve control

Release Date:2026-09-23       BrowseNumber of times:66

With the continuous improvement of industrial automation levels, regulating valves, as an indispensable important executive mechanism in industrial process control, the real-time monitoring and remote control of their operating status have become particularly important. Traditional on-site manual or single-point control methods are no longer able to meet the modern complex system's demand for efficient, stable, and intelligent control of regulating valves. Therefore, the adoption of networked control technology to realize centralized control and status monitoring of multiple regulating valves has become a development trend in the field of industrial control.

The Basic Principle of Regulating Valve Network Control

The control of regulating valves through a network is achieved by connecting the regulating valves with a control system (such as PLC, DCS, or industrial computer) via a communication network, which enables remote control of valves, data collection, and status monitoring. Common communication protocols include Modbus, Profibus, CANopen, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, etc. Choosing the appropriate communication protocol is crucial for the stability and real-time performance of the network.

Two, Networking Methods for Regulating Valve Network Control

1. Centralized Control Architecture

In a centralized control architecture, all regulating valves are connected to the central controller (such as PLC or DCS) through field buses (such as Profibus DP, Modbus RTU) or industrial Ethernet. The central controller sends unified control commands according to process requirements, while receiving status feedback information from each regulating valve. This structure is convenient for unified management and is suitable for small and medium-sized control systems.

2. Distributed Control Architecture

In large or complex systems, distributed control is more reasonable. Each regulating valve or a group of valves is equipped with a local intelligent control unit (such as an intelligent valve locator) and connected to the supervisory control system through field buses or industrial Ethernet. The distributed architecture improves the flexibility and scalability of the system, while enhancing the fault-tolerance capability of the system.

3. Wireless Network Control

With the development of wireless communication technology, an increasing number of regulating valve systems are beginning to use wireless communication methods such as Wi-Fi, ZigBee, LoRa, or 5G for networking. Wireless network control is suitable for situations with difficult wiring, strong mobility, or multi-point distribution, but attention should be paid to signal stability, security, and anti-interference ability.

Three, Key Technologies and Equipment for Networking

- Intelligent valve locators: Equipped with digital communication interfaces, capable of valve position feedback, fault diagnosis, and remote control.
- Controllers (PLC/DCS): Responsible for logical control and data processing, serving as the 'brain' of the entire control system.
- Switches and routers: Basic equipment for building industrial Ethernet, ensuring high-speed and stable data transmission.
- Communication module: Realizes the conversion between different communication protocols, ensuring interconnectivity between devices.
- Supervisory software (such as configuration software): Used for human-machine interaction, data visualization, and system alarm management.

Four, Actual Application Cases

In a chemical factory production system, in order to achieve centralized control of multiple regulating valves, an Ethernet networking method based on Modbus TCP protocol was adopted. Each regulating valve is equipped with an intelligent locator that supports Modbus communication, and all locators are connected to the PLC system through industrial switches. The supervisory computer communicates with the PLC through an OPC server, realizing remote control, opening degree monitoring, and fault alarm of regulating valves. The system runs stably, is easy to maintain, and greatly improves production efficiency and automation level.

Five, Conclusion

The networking method of the control valve network should be comprehensively considered based on specific application scenarios, system scale, cost budget, and other factors. With the development of industrial internet and intelligent manufacturing, the future control system of regulating valves will be more intelligent, integrated, and open. Only by continuously optimizing the networking structure, improving communication efficiency and system security, can we better meet the high-standard requirements of modern industry for regulating valve control.
