How to decouple multi-variables of regulating valves

Release Date:2026-10-10       BrowseNumber of times:94
In the field of industrial automation control, regulating valves, as actuators, are widely used in the control of parameters such as flow, pressure, temperature, and liquid level. However, in many actual systems, there is often a coupling effect among the multiple variables controlled by the regulating valve, that is, the change of one control variable can cause the response of multiple controlled variables. This multi-variable coupling phenomenon can seriously affect the performance and stability of the control system, therefore, how to achieve decoupling among multi-variables has become an important issue in the design of control systems.

The Causes of Multivariable Coupling

In multivariable control systems, when the control valve affects multiple controlled variables at the same time, a coupling phenomenon occurs. For example, in a steam heating system, the change in the opening of the control valve not only affects the steam flow but may also cause changes in temperature and pressure, and these changes may also affect each other. This coupling relationship is usually determined by the characteristics of the physical process itself.

The expression form of coupled systems can be static coupling (variables have a relationship under steady state) or dynamic coupling (variables interact with each other during the dynamic response process). In control design, if this coupling relationship is not considered, the controller may not achieve the ideal control effect, and even lead to system instability or oscillation.

Basic Principles of Decoupling

The core idea of decoupling control is to design a feedforward or feedback compensator so that each control variable only affects the corresponding controlled variable, thereby eliminating the mutual interference between variables. Ideally, the system after decoupling should have a diagonalized transfer function matrix, that is, the system matrix is a diagonal matrix, and the non-diagonal elements are zero, indicating that there is no coupling between variables.

Common decoupling methods include:

1. Series Decoupling Method: Decoupling compensator is added between the controller and the controlled object to achieve decoupling through the inverse operation of the system model.
2. State Feedback Decoupling Method: Decoupling control between variables is realized by using state observers and state feedback.
3. Fuzzy Decoupling and Neural Network Decoupling: In cases where the system model is unclear or strongly nonlinear, intelligent control methods are used for online decoupling.
4. PID Control Combined with Decoupling: The combination of PID control with decoupling compensator is suitable for linear systems that are commonly used in engineering.

Application of Decoupling in Control Valve Systems

In practical applications, the decoupling of the control valve system usually depends on the mathematical model of the system. First, obtain the transfer function matrix of the system through experiments or modeling, and then design the decoupling compensator according to the matrix structure. For example, in a two-input two-output control valve system, two compensator modules can be designed to ensure that each control signal only affects the corresponding output variable.

In engineering practice, due to the existence of model errors and external interference, decoupling control often needs to be combined with robust control strategies to enhance the interference resistance and adaptability of the system.

Summary

Decoupling in the multivariable system of control valves is a key link to improve control accuracy and system stability. Through reasonable decoupling design, it can effectively reduce the mutual disturbance between variables, improve the dynamic performance and reliability of the control system. With the development of control theory and computer technology, decoupling control based on advanced methods such as model predictive control (MPC) and artificial intelligence is gradually being applied in industry, providing more possibilities for the control of complex control valve systems.

In the future, with the increasing complexity of process industries, control valves and their control systems will face more challenges. Researching more efficient and practical decoupling methods will become an important development direction in the field of automation control.
